《生化奇兵》是由开发知名恐怖游戏“网络奇兵（System Shock）系列”的Irrational Games公司开发的次世代FPS新作，因此本作从2004年末正式发表开始便一直备受关注，而在2006的E3展中首次亮相的《生化奇兵》获得了业界人士以及玩家的极高评价。

　　游戏中所在的“极乐世界（Rapture）”曾是一个真正的乌托邦，它由前苏联流亡者安德鲁·莱恩（Andrew Ryan）于1946年设计。极乐世界的设计目标是为全世界最出色、最优秀的画家、科学家和运动员们提供完美的生存空间。作为这个世界的创造者，莱恩享受着高于所有其他住民的经济优势。然而一些事件的发生让极乐世界的经济平衡彻底崩溃，并且成为一个灾难世界。
